Installing WordPress on NearlyFreeSpeech

Now that you’ve created a site and setup your MySQL Process and database within NearlyFreeSpeech you can install WordPress for your website.

To add WordPress to your new website, first download the newest version of WordPress. View this downloaded file on your computer (you will need to change one file before adding it your website) and unzip the file. You will need to edit one of the files within a text editor that does not change the formatting, like TextWrangler. Open the wp-config-sample.php file within this text editor. There are two sections of this file that will need to be updated locally before uploading this file to your Site.

Update the MySQL Settings

The database name, username and password are what you entered when creating the database (suggested database name was along the lines of wpsitename).

  • Database Name
  • Database Username
  • Database Password
  • Database Host :: this is the name that you created when setting up the mysql process (ending in .db). You can also find this my going to the mysql tab and finding the database listed under DSN.

You do not need to make any changes to the Database Charset or Database Collate type

Update the Authentication Unique Keys and Salts

For the Authentication Unique Keys and Salts use the WordPress auto-generator to create these keys for you. Replace the values within the wp-config-sample.php file to use the values created by the WordPress generator.

Save the file as wp-config.php (remove the ‘-sample’ from the file name).

Upload WordPress to your Site

Within Filezilla navigate to the WordPress folder that you’ve downloaded and where you’ve now changed the wp-config-sample to wp-config. If you are creating wordpress at your website’s root (if your website is and you want to display your WordPress implementation, rather than a subdomain like or folder within the website).

Log into your Site using the SSH/SFTP information that you’ve setup (this login name and host can be found on the Sites page within NearlyFreeSpeech). Copy the files from the WordPress file over to your website in filezilla. This may take a few minutes.

Installing WordPress

Once the files are on your website you will need to run the install script for WordPress. If you placed the WordPress files in the root directory, you should visit: where you will see a WordPress login page. This is where you will setup the website’s name and the login credentials that will be used to login to your website on a regular basis.

You’re done!
